One of our favourite books here at Fat Buddha Store has to be Upper Playgrounds - 10 Years Of T-Shirt Graphics . The book shows, well, exactly what the title says the last ten years of t-shirt graphics by San Fransisco’s finest street culture shop & clothing line, Upper Playground. If you’re a fan of the latest street art, t shirts or just cool stuff, then this book is definitely for you. The affiliated gallery, Fifty24SF, shows works by leading urban artists, some of whom are the world’s most provocative. French artist and photographer JR shown above in his NYC studio is renowned for his large black-and-white photographic images in public locations, and his latest work in New York City notorious Rikers Island prison makes no exception. The prison is located on an island in the East River between Queens and the Bronx. His large-scale wheatpasted work depicts a large eye of an inmate who in JR’s own words “wanted me to choose his eye looking left as life in jail is all about watching your back. He came out in the jail yard when we were pasting. He’s 18-years-old, it’s his second time in jail. Even if no one will recognize his eye he knows he’s part of a bigger picture.” You can check out some pics below. One of our favourite magazines VNA (Very Nearly Almost) has just arrived through the door at Fat Buddha Store. Issue 21 is packed with great features including a cover shot of Miss Van doing what she does best, yip you guessed it, painting. This issue also features Inkie, DAL & Faith47, Rone and much more. For anyone not familiar with the magazine, VNA is a UK-based independent magazine printed quarterly which features interviews with some of the world’s best urban artists, illustrators and photographers. Launched in 2006, VNA tracks everything from the wheatpastes, paint and stencils out there on the streets through to gallery shows and events that bring together artists from around the world. Each issue brings you in-depth feature articles and interviews with the biggest names on the scene, as well as up and coming artists. One of our favourite piece's of furniture and design here at Fat Buddha Store from last year has to be Jeff Skierka's great Mixtape Table , and now it looks like the table is ready to order. The 12:1 scale table is ready just in time for the cassette tape’s 50th anniversary and is made of high-grade Baltic birch plywood with maple veneer, solid American walnut, and features a hand-applied oil finish. Each coffee table is built upon order and is hand-assembled and finished in Seattle. Just like a real cassette tape, the piece is completely reversible – sides A and B, stamped and numbered on one side. The table sits on a custom platform with hand-bent steel powder coated legs and includes a 3/8-inch polished edge with glass top. Check out the pics of the finished product below. Bookman lights have arrived instore at Fat Buddha Store, and are one on the most quirky and functional things we have seen in a while. The company began life at the end of 2009 with three friends who had about half a semester left of their degree in Industrial engineering and another friend that also didn’t want to get a proper 9-5 job. They took the choice to try the entrepreneurial route and went to work. Most of them were dedicated cyclists and all shared an interest in design which gave them the direction for the brand. They thought that they are so many gadgets and accessories for bikes in the market but there was so few that we would like to put on their bikes. The company wanted to make accessories that would complement the bike instead of detract from it. They did some projects on the side to get the money for tooling and after a lot of samples getting sent back and forth they were happy to place the first order of lights in the spring of 2011.
