JR Brings Art To Rikers Island New York City

French artist and photographer JR shown above in his NYC studio is renowned for his large black-and-white photographic images in public locations, and his latest work in New York City notorious Rikers Island prison makes no exception. The prison is located on an island in the East River between Queens and the Bronx. His large-scale wheatpasted work depicts a large eye of an inmate who in JR’s own words “wanted me to choose his eye looking left as life in jail is all about watching your back. He came out in the jail yard when we were pasting. He’s 18-years-old, it’s his second time in jail. Even if no one will recognize his eye he knows he’s part of a bigger picture.” You can check out some pics below.
JR has lots of great shows in various galleries around New York at present, so if you happen to be their you should go check out his work. We have lots of great books and magazines available in Fat Buddha Store covering Graffiti, Urban art, architecture and much more you can check out here.
