Going Out - Million Dollar Disco at The Berkeley Suite

Image
Million Dollar Disco return to Glasgow this Saturday night (18th January) almost a year to the day since their last party there. To say they're excited is a bit of an understatement, anyone who was there last January is sure to understand why. All this in the intimate surrounding of one of Glasgow's best club spaces, The Berkeley Suite. Al Kent was born in Scotland. His father was an avid record collector and had a cabinet full of them. And Whisky. Everything from Abba and Elvis to the Glitter Band and Buddy Holly was in there. What a load of shit they were.
In 1976 Al ran away from home to live in New York. Here, at the age of 8 he started attending the Loft and hanging out with Nicky Siano and a whole bunch of cool New York DJs with Italian names. In 1978 he was arrested for possession of PCP while guesting at Better Days with Tee Scott and deported back to Glasgow, where his dad was now getting into a bit more David Essex. He was shit too.
So Al opened....

Going Out - Daniele Baldelli at The Berkeley Suite

Image
This Saturday night (Sat 16th Nov) legendary DJ and producer Daniele Baldelli takes control of the music in one of Glasgow's most intimate  and greatest clubs The Berkeley Suite for this rare special appearance. The self-titled “oldest DJ in Italy”, is the founding father of the Cosmic disco sound. His creative blend of disco, funk, jazz, synth pop, reggae, electronic music, and African and Brazilian records – often played slower or faster – introduced many club-goers to a new mix of rhythm and sound. Hailing from the town of Cattolica in Northern Italy, Daniele made his DJ debut at 17 at local clubs Tana and Tabu, before graduating to the seminal Baia Degli Angeli, a glamorous VIP club whose DJ booth was in a glass elevator. This led to Daniele’s long residency at the Cosmic club by Lake Garda that opened in Italy in 1979. At this infamous, hedonistic club Baldelli would be simultaneously spinning, triggering drum machines and samplers, blending batucada samba with Kr...

Music Monday - Psychemagik

Image
The UK duo, known for their sensational disco and psychedelic edits, obscenely vast record collections, beautiful production work and transcendent mixtape journeys, are being heralded as a truly unique and positive presence in today's music scene. Although Tom and Danny have both been utterly immersed in music since time itself began, Psychemagik's first appearance on wax was an edit of Fleetwood Mac's 'Everywhere', which quickly found its way into the record bags of veterans like Tom Middleton and Greg Wilson, and instantly cemented their place in the disco music world. The duo have since released a string of highly acclaimed edits, original productions and remixes. They regularly play at major festivals, clubs and special events all over the UK and Europe with tours in the USA and Australia early in 2013.  "An ear for mind-expanding dance floor mysticism" – FACT Magazine   Their studio output is prolific to say the l...

Image
English electronic music duo and all-around force of nature in the dance scene, Basement Jaxx, made a welcome return this weekend, with the leak of their new track 'What A Difference Your Love Makes', a precursor to a forthcoming EP, slated for September. Consisting of Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe, Basement Jaxx had been making waves in the underground house scene all through the early and mid 90's with their regular club nights in Brixton which featured guests such as DJ Sneak and Daft Punk. In 1999, the duo released their first full length album titled 'Remedy' which featured the widely popular singles 'Red Alert' and 'Rendez-Vu'. Their second full length 'Rooty', released in 2001, led to the groups first international hit with the single 'Where's Your Head At?', in part due to its inclusion on the Tomb Raider soundtrack. 'Kish Kash', the groups third studio album saw them work with the likes of D...

Going Out - Thomas Bullock (Rub N Tug) At The Berkeley Suite

Image
If your not at T In The Park this weekend, and your out on the town there is only one party to be at this Saturday night (Sat 13th July) and that's at The Berkeley Suite with Thomas Bullock (Map Of Africa/Rub N Tug/ Thomas Of England) and DJ Billy Woods (Supermax). Most commonly known for his participation in the Rub’N’Tug psychedelic disco machine alongside Eric Duncan, Thomas' career in music stretches all the way back to late 80s Cambridge where he was a part of the “legendary” Tonka party crew alongside long term aficionado DJ Harvey – the two would later record together as Map Of Africa on the Whatever We Want label. Thomas Bullock has been a resident of the USA since the early 90s, first pitching up in San Francisco and gaining reputation as part of the “Wicked” collective then moving to New York City and inadvertently starting electroclash as part of A.R.E Weapons, before focusing on less risible musical endeavors under a multiplicity of names includi...

Going Out - Pistols At Dawn With Alfredo (3 Hour Balearic Set)

Image
One of our favourite club nights to emerge in the last few months has to be Pistols At Dawn . In a short space of time they have brought some great guests to one of Fat Buddha Store 's favourite Bar/Club spaces, Max's La Cheetah on Queen St in Glasgow. Guests have included Balearic Mike, Bill Brewster, Tusk Wax and now the legend that is Alfredo. As far as DJs are concerned, there are very few who merit such a title. However there are very few DJs who have had the influence of Alfredo Fiorito. Or as he's more commonly known, DJ Alfredo . To put it simply. Alfredo is pretty much responsible for modern clubbing as we know it in the UK. Quite a feat for an Argentinian journalist living on a small Spanish island. In 1987's Britain, going to a night club for most people was a very different experience to what most of us are now used to. Clubbing meant dressing in your smartest clothes to get in to your local ritzy nightclub where the main goal was to get ...

Going Out - Naive w/ DJ Falcon at The Berkeley Suite

Image
Naive welcome back DJ Falcon for their final party of the spring programme this Saturday (11th May) at the Berkeley Suite in Glasgow. It's a timely appearance, as Falcon has recently returned to the studio alongside long time friends Daft Punk, collaborating on a track due to be released on Random Access Memories. Given past collective works, we've faith that it'll be one of the standouts from the album. The Together releases by Falcon and Thomas Bangalter are certainly a fine template and eponymous examples of the French House sound. Vitamins pairing Shaun and Tanner will be opening the first couple of hours of the evening with some fitting disco and house selections. Things kick off at 11pm and run till 3am. Tickets look set to go fast, so you better get on this one quick and the way it's looking you should Dress to Sweat!

Music Monday - Greg Wilson Bestival Mix

Image
Greg Wilson is a Merseyside based DJ and producer who started out back in 1975 and has strong links to both the 80's electro scene in Manchester and the current disco/re edit scene which has seen his following grow on a global scale. Between 1984 and 2003 Greg actually quit DJ'ing but returned and now plays frequently all over the world. And his mixes are a constant favourite on the store soundsystem. Seen as the weather has been so depressing recently and festival season seems to be officially over we thought we would try and cheer people up with Greg's latest live mix from the Bollywood tent at Bestival. A real nice blend of old tracks and new and one that's be sure to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step! Greg Wilson has a fantastic knowledge on music and recently expressed his thoughts on a recent debate on the origins of dance music. A very interesting read, as well as the rest of his blog which you can check out here . You can also check ou...

Music Monday - Todd Terje

Image
You may have already heard of "Todd Terje" if not you will soon with the release of his infectious "Inspector Norse" single, which is looking to be one of the catchiest, exciting and probably one of the most simple dance tracks of the summer if not the year. The video for it is pretty funny too, keep your eyes peeled for the full short movie version to be released pretty soon. Originally from Norway Todd Terje is a DJ/Producer who would be placed in the Nu-Disco genre. He started to build a large undergound following after he put out early re-edits and his debut single Euro dans, which has summer written all over. He's got one hell of a tache an all. The Norwegian based DJ/Producer who studied Physics at Oslo University is likely to have been influenced by fellow Norwegians Lindstrom and Prins Tomas, in creating modern disco and some really excellent re-edits of old disco classics such as Chic - I want your love. Luckily for us here in Glasgow Todd...
