Florence To - Visual Artist

Image
Scottish visual artist Florence To has been busy dressing some of London's coolest music spaces over the last while. Her installations have a physical musicality to them that’s inspired by the body.  “Every shape I create I think about the rhythm,” says Grangemouth-born, London-based artist Florence T o of the graceful installations she builds that are shaking up preconceptions of live visuals. If you’re tuned in to the electronic music scene in London or Glasgow it’s more than likely you’ll have seen her work at Boiler Room, Sub Club, Dollop, Soundcrash or Red Bull Music Academy. To’s also worked closely with producers including Shigeto and Auntie Flo to create custom installations for their live events. In fact, it was at Boiler Room last summer that I first locked eyes on To’s work: a giant abstract African mask made of different shaped screens, each one pulsing with different colours and animating in sync with Auntie Flo’s music. The visuals were mapped to each scr...

Image
Tonight see's the return of Highlife to La Cheetah with a party that was meant to happen late in 2012 but instead is opening the year 2013. Londoner via Paris Romare headlines tonights Mediations in Afrocentrism show with his unique take on African and African-American music which he generates through an innovative and wide-reaching method of sampling. Romare released his EP 'Mediations in Afrocentrism' back in March last year on Black Acre Records after spending a year collecting samples of songs, speeches, films, field recordings and interviews and rearranging and integrating them with West African rhythms and voices from Harlem in an attempt to better explain the relationships between these two musical cultures.   You can familiarise yourself with Romare by listening to his Boiler Room session below. Tonight he brings this unique style to La Cheetah with support coming from Esa and Fat Buddha Store favourite Auntie Flo, doors open at 11pm and £5 entry,...

Music Monday - Stream Daphni's JIALONG Album

Image
Dan Snaith aka Caribou will release his debut LP under his more dance influenced moniker Daphni next week and the good people over at Resident Advisor are letting you stream the album in full before its release. Released on his own JIALONG Label and also called JIALONG the album features several vinyl only cuts as well as a modular synthesiser built by the man himself which can be heard on earlier release "Ye Ye". We actually used one of the album tracks "Yes I Know" as a soundtrack to a store promo video for the Levi's Commuter range launch night. Fat Buddha x Levi's Commuter Range Launch from Fat Buddha Store on Vimeo . From what we've heard it sounds like everything we expected from one of electronic music's most exciting artists right now. Stream it  here .

Music Monday

Image
Last week saw the release of friend of the shop Brian D'Souza aka Auntie Flo's Remixed EP. The two track EP features Pearson Sound's bass heavy take on "Oh My Days" which boomkat describes as having a focus on the "tight, skippy percussive lilt and bumping subs".  The other is mutual friend of the label and recent newcomer SOPHIE's standout version of "Highlife" which takes the song on a much more bright percussion heavy route. Auntie Flo is a Glasgow based producer/DJ who holds residencies at Glasgow's Sub Club with Highlife and London's Plastic People with Huntleys and Palmers.  Auntie Flo is a real talent to look out for in 2012 and we are very excited for the release of his debut album Future Rhythm Machine. This year is really looking to be a good one for him and we recommend if you get the chance to go and catch him, he will be playing at several festivals throughout the summer from Lovebox in London to Dimensions Festiva...
