Tomorrow's Treasures

Ever wondered why some things are more valuable than others? Well read on and I shall explain....

Be it sneakers, vinyl figures, plush toys or even spray cans, here at Fat Buddha we have loads of opportunities to get your hands on a little bit of treasure for the future. With a little bit of knowledge, some care of your goods and throw in some luck and you could be sitting on a nice nest egg.

Something is only worth what somebody will pay for it, and if you are the only one with that thing, then it can suddenly become very valuable. 

Limited edition goods are always a safe place to start (the clue is in the 'limited'), this means that only a certain number are made, be it 50, 100, or even 1000, there are only a limited number of them about. Over the years, many of these will be lost, damaged, broken or discarded, making something that was once only limited, now being extremely rare! This is where the smart collectors come in. A well looked after collectable, meaning clean, undamaged, and preferably with original packaging, can multiply many times over in value and if you have the receipt or certification of authenticity, add some more zeros on to the price you can expect.

Timing is everything, which can be something simple like a remake of an old film, a magazine article or a celebrity mentioning a product from their childhood, before you know it, the £5 purchase you made twenty years ago, is suddenly worth £500! The price of original Star Wars figures went through the roof when the films were re-mastered and the prequels released, and they were mass produced.

As the Star Wars figures go to show, it doesn't have to cost you a fortune to make money from collecting. Cheap/mass produced objects are treated as such, and are not as well looked after as something which costs more or has a certain expectation of future value, and will inevitably lead to there being very few good examples of them around in years to come. Like the limited edition objects, pristine, boxed examples will always be worth the most.

What to collect? Well that's really up to you, and what your budget can stretch to. I personally don't believe in buying things to lock away, never to see the light of day until the time comes to cash in. I go for things I enjoy, and even if they don't make money (there's no guarantees remember) then I will have had many years of seeing them and showing them off as my reward. Alternatively, you can be like some of our customers who buy two of everything, one to display, wear etc. and another to hide away for a rainy day.
