Going Out - Optimo presents “100 years, with Justin Strauss (New York City)”

Image
Optimo presents “100 years, with Justin Strauss (New York City)” Few djs are truly deserving of the accolade “legend”. Justin Strauss is one of them. With a career in music stretching back over 40 years, Justin is one of the most iconic djs still playing. A huge part of what originally inspired the creation of Optimo was the New York club scene of the early 1980s, that Justin was a huge part of, with its clash of punk rock, no wave, new wave, funk, electro, hip hop and disco scenes all coming together. As well as hanging out in the dj booth at the Paradise Garage, Justin was dj at a series of clubs that define the New York club scene of that era, then indisputably the best in the world; Mudd Club, Danceteri a, Palladium, Tunnel, and Area, clubs that if we had a time machine would be our first port of call. He was also one of a select group of DJs who pioneered a new trend that we today take for granted; remixing. His discography is insane with nearly 500 credits o...

Monday Music - D'Angelo and The Vanguard, Sub Rosa, Offbeat

Image
This weeks Monday Music post brings you the lowdown for some of the top nights in Glasgow this week plus a look at the upcoming vinyl release of the highly acclaimed D'Angelo album, Black Messiah. Holding down a weekly night is not an easy task, especially when your night happens to be on the armpit of the calender week, Wednesady nights. Giving a proverbial middle finger to tradition, the Sub Rosa boys, Spittal & Nowicki, manage to overcome their untimely obstacle by bringing in some of the biggest DJ's and producers going about, from big names including Breach and Ben Pearce to honouring local heroes such as Twitch and Harri. But in the true spirit of the Sub Club its the residents night that truly captures the soul of the weekly workout. This Wednesday at Sub Club The Offbeat brand has become a Glasgow institution delivering top tier bookings to the young team of the city. From big names ranging from DJ Funk to New York Transit Authority, the monthly La Cheetah cl...

Going Out - Optimo "Dark Was The Night" Release Party At The Sub Club

Image
To celebrate the release of Optimo's great new "Dark Was The Night" mix album the duo are returning to the Sub Club tonight (Friday 31st Jan) for their first residency date of 2014. Though Jonnie Wilkes and Keith McIvor have done scores of commercial and free mixes down the years, Dark Was The Night rivals any of their previous selections in terms of diversity. Across 21 tracks, the techno of Terrence Dixon and Silent Servant mingles with Scottish '70s punk band The Freeze, New York minimal wavers Jeff & Jayne Hudson, Kode9 & Space Ape's new-school dub and experimental cuts from the likes of Nurse With Wound, Hieroglyphic Being and Carter Tutti. The title of the mix is a nod to Blind Willie Johnson, whose song "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground" was one of the 27 pieces of music taken on the Voyager space flight in 1977 (known collectively as the Voyager Golden Records). Despite this, Johnson died penniless of malaria ...

Going Out - Dixon Avenue Basement Jams at The Sub Club

Image
One of our favourite labels and one of the best labels around right now has to be Dixon Avenue Basement Jams. It's great to see the guy's behind it Kenny and Dan take to Subculture at Glasgow's Sub Club tomorrow night (Saturday 25th Jan) for what looks set to be an outstanding night of music. Based out of Glasgow, the motto for the labels is “real rockin’ raw shit from the street for the clubs”, and it sums up the imprint to date perfectly. Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, quite frankly, release weird, non standard machine music that spits and splurts, blurts and bleats all kinds of alien patterns, hooks and melodies into your ears and has done with every single one of its EP's so far. Despite belying any one easy genre classification, never is the music too weird, alien or off the wall to not be hugely likeable – there is often a moment of serene synth calm, a catchy vocal clip or soulful detroit reflection hidden within the rawness of EPs from Marquis Ha...

The night not only celebrates UK music history but writes it too: A world first in live streaming, all 30 capsules will be broadcast simultaneously on the web (on Channel4.com in the UK, and globally via Red Bull Music's YouTube channel). The individual streams, which allow fans the world over to be part of the celebration, provide a snapshot of some of the most influential club nights that, together, have shaped the nation's musically rich c...

For their first night in the Sub club they booked Lawrence & Mr C, everything went better than they could of imagined and since then they have tried to bring a sound to Glasgow that excites themselves and hopefully everyone who has supported them in the past 9 years. This year the event focuses around the underground dance music and club scene, paying a homage to the best of the best club nights and nightclubs the UK has to offer, taking a slice of each scene from each city and presenting them across 30 stages.   The night consists of all 30 Capsules of the London Eye playing host to a seminal night withing the UK's club scene, both form the past and present. Going Out - John Talabot at Subculture

Image
Barcelona resident John Talabot's 2010 track 'Sunshine' put him firmly on the DJ world map and he's been on the Subculture radar for a few years. His debut artist album 'fiN' on Permanent Vacation gained rave reviws last year, highlighting a shimmering balearic sensibility so this DJ set will no doubt bring some welcome sunshine to our Scottish summer, if not a permanent vacation. He plays Subculture at Glasgow's famous Sub Club tomorrow night (Sat 20th July) Harri & Domenic are honoured that he is joining them for his Subculture debut. This promises to be a night of outstanding music not to be missed!

Music Monday - Jurassic 5!

Image
Pioneering hip hop group and legends in the game, Jurassic 5, hit Glasgow tonight for what is sure to be a not to be missed performance at the O2 Academy. The group are currently on a reunion tour after officially disbanding in 2007, but reuniting earlier this year to play Coachella and Parklife Weekender. Jurassic 5, consisting of MC's Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir and Mark 7even alongside DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist, were formed in 1993, an amalgamation of two previous groups - Rebels of Rhythm and Unity Committee. The first official release from the group was 'Jurassic 5 EP', a nine-track EP which included much of the material that would eventually find its home on their self-titled debut album. 'Jurassic 5' featured such classic tracks as 'Concrete Schoolyard' and 'Blacktop Beat' which earned them a deal with Interscope Records. 'Quality Control' was their first new release on Interscope and came out in 2000, their first alb...

It’s set to be the party of the summer and they’ve pulled out as many stops as they could get their hands on to bring what we believe is their most exciting line up at Rockness to date. Friday: Kerri Chandler Julio Bashmore Jackmaster Huxley Beta & Kappa Saturday: Carl Craig Harri & Domenic Henrik Schwarz Scuba Guy Gerber Sensu Thunder Disco Club Kerri Chandler has been injecting soul into music since the early 90s, making him one of house music’s true originators. Going Out - Sub Club Record Fair & Fat Buddha Pop Up Sale Store - Subculture with Mark E

Image
In association with our good friends at the worldly renowned Sub Club in Glasgow and DJ Rebecca Vasmant we are pleased to be setting up a Fat Buddha Pop Up Sale Store during Sat 1st June alongside the record Fair, all housed under the roof of the Sub Club. The record fair looks to be great with a number of local vendors exhibiting. This is set to be a treasure trove for vinyl fiends and with a selection of local DJ’s soundtracking the goings on. This is already promising to turn into an unmissable hangout for the cities regular revelers. Bringing together local labels who will be selling their wares, and individuals peddling second hand records, t hink along the lines of an Independent Label Market meets your favorite second hand record shop.  In brief, this is pretty much the best way we can think of to while away a Saturday afternoon.
