Carhartt WIP Sound Of Detroit Strata Special

Carhartt WIP present the fifth installment of their popular Sound of Detroit Series. The latest collaboration is with Detroit's iconic Starta Records, the short lived Jazz, Funk and fusion label from the late 60's and early 70's.

Starta Records was formed in the wake of the Detroit riots of 67' and 68' as a cathartic reaction, to educate and create awareness. Formed and run by artists it was established in an art gallery come-live venue and started the first university Jazz music program. The short lived label was only responsible for the release of 10 records in it's time.

When DJ Amir Abdullah, one half of DJ duo Kon & Amir, was commissioned in 2010 to create a lost youth exhibit for a Detroit online museum he choose to appraise Strata. He showcased their huge impact by re-issuing their back catalogue through his own label 180 Proof Records.

In honour of this Carhartt WIP have teamed up with DJ Amir Abdullah to create a capsule collection influenced by the label's posters and graphics. Check out the full collection here or shop the first pieces, the Herbie Hancock T-shirt and Musics T-shirt, in store and online at Fat Buddha Store. You can also listen to the mix DJ Amir created for Carhartt WIP's Strata Radio Show here.
