Slam start 2016 as they mean to go on. It's their Soma label's 25th anniversary year and what better way to begin the new year than with another sold-out Pressure party in January. February looks certain to follow suit as Orde and Stuart invite Berghain / Panorama Bar residents Marcel Fengler and Boris to join them in the Techno bastion that the new main room has quickly become….with Skream & Scuba sharing the honours in the upstairs warehouse & Laura Jones taking over the intimate Poetry Club.
Marcel Fengler
Techno according to Marcel Fengler has nothing to do with being a go-getter or having an alternative career, it is way more than means to an end: it is his definitive and concentrated passion. In Marcel Fengler´s world, opposites attract. Ambient and electronica are equal parts in his sets that owe as much to the UK´s progressive school of relentless techno as they do to that special ´Berghain sound´.
Boris
Few artists have seen club culture evolve the way Boris has. The German DJ got his start dancing to Hi-NRG in early '80s West Berlin, more than a decade before house and techno transformed the city's nightlife. In the '80s he lived in New York and got his house and disco education at The Paradise Garage and David Mancuso's Loft. He returned to Berlin in the early '90s, just as the city's techno scene was exploding. Today, all of these experiences inform his sets at Berghain, where he's been a resident since day one. A techno specialist at the controls.
Skream
Ollie 'Skream' Jones is on a major roll. The 29 year old Croydon DJ, producer and original dubstepper has seen his career explode even further since taking inspiration from his friend and associate Jackmaster and others leading him to veer away from the genre he helped to create to play more House & Techno & even some Disco. He has become a firm favourite in Glasgow and much further afield.
Scuba
Since 2003, Paul Rose – better known to the world as techno maverick Scuba – and his Hotflush imprint have shaped the direction of the electronic scene’s bass-heavy landscape more than most. Starting with the underground garage sound that became dubstep, and gradually teasing its dark, bass-heavy sonics through abstract electronica, jacking house and cavernous techno, they are the underground tastemakers behind era-defining club smashes like Joy Orbison’s ‘Hyph Myngo’ and 2013’s ‘Untitled’, the ubiquitous piano house banger by Paul Woolford. They also launched the careers of innovators as diverse as Mount Kimbie, George FitzGerald, and Sepalcure.
As a DJ and producer, meanwhile, Rose’s personal achievements have seen him ascend to rank among the UK’s electronic luminaries. He has released three artist albums, spun a mix for the esteemed DJ Kicks series, run a night at Berghain, and won a DJ Mag Best Live Act award. A musical contrarian, Scuba has deliberately pushed against dance music currents, changing course when it suits him.
Laura Jones
Amidst an endless army of DJs, Laura Jones´s light shines bright through the underground. On first glance perhaps it´s her trademark orange sunglasses and presence that can beam a smile from behind a turntable to the other side of a festival. Or the fact that her first forays into production steam rollered her into the spotlight. The house and techno starlet strode into our lives in 2011 with Love IN Me, a summer anthem that filled her diary for the year almost overnight. But Laura´s story didn´t just begin with a big track and an eye condition that requires her to wear the glasses that protect her vision. It began at an early age spending every penny collecting music. Buying vinyl like her life depended on it after discovering underground music on an Ibizan dancefloor. Bucking the trend of one hit wonder producers lacking the DJing skills to maintain their success on the world stage, she´s earning a reputation as a DJ´s DJ.
