Going Out - Moodymann at Max's La Cheetah

Image
Someone who needs no introduction is Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr), who plays Max's La Cheetah Club tonight in Glasgow (Friday 7th Match). An outspoken voice in the normally non-confrontational world of electronic dance music, Moodymann is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre's origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned. Utilizing classic soul an d jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster, he has achieved classic status thanks to gems like "Sunday Morning", "Shades of Jae", and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra's "People Make the World Go Round". Following years of 12" only releases, he compiled his best work on "Silentintroduction", one of the most ...

Going Out - Dixon Avenue Basement Jams at The Sub Club

Image
One of our favourite labels and one of the best labels around right now has to be Dixon Avenue Basement Jams. It's great to see the guy's behind it Kenny and Dan take to Subculture at Glasgow's Sub Club tomorrow night (Saturday 25th Jan) for what looks set to be an outstanding night of music. Based out of Glasgow, the motto for the labels is “real rockin’ raw shit from the street for the clubs”, and it sums up the imprint to date perfectly. Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, quite frankly, release weird, non standard machine music that spits and splurts, blurts and bleats all kinds of alien patterns, hooks and melodies into your ears and has done with every single one of its EP's so far. Despite belying any one easy genre classification, never is the music too weird, alien or off the wall to not be hugely likeable – there is often a moment of serene synth calm, a catchy vocal clip or soulful detroit reflection hidden within the rawness of EPs from Marquis Ha...

Felix Da Housecat at The Berkeley Suite

Image
Felix Da Housecat will be tearing up Glasgow’s Berkeley Suite tonight (23rd November) for another set of house music and electroclash. His reinterpretation of songs by Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue and Nina Simone has made him one of the most dominant remixers and producers on the planet. Felix da Housecat’s 2001 album, Kittenz and thee Glitz, turned the dance music world on its side as his collaborations with the now infamous Miss Kittin on “Silver Screen” and “Madame Hollywood” and Melistar on “Harlot” and “What Does it Feel Like” spawned a synth club revival. Along the way, Felix gained mainstream press acceptance and was heralded by Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone and Spin as one of the most creative artists in music today. Over the course of 20 years his determination and willingness to re-invent himself have led him to a point that has now included a Grammy nomination, remix work for artists such as Madonna, Garbage, New Order and Giorgio Moroder; to DJ gig...

Going Out - Sensu is 9 at The Sub Club /w Subb-An & DJ Tennis

Image
One of Glasgow's most loved parties Sensu turns 9 tonight (Friday 25th Oct) at the world famous Sub Club in Glasgow. Kicking things off back in the Q club in 2004 residents Barry Price & Junior moved onwards and upwards to the long winding steps of the Liquid Lounge. However, their aspiration was always to host Sensu in their favourite place in the world, The Sub Club . Luckily they were given that chance! For their first night in the Sub club they booked Lawrence & Mr C, everything went better than they could of imagined and since then they have tried to bring a sound to Glasgow that excites themselves and hopefully everyone who has supported them in the past 9 years. The club night has hosted an endless amount of outstanding guests, such as Steve Bug, Ricardo Villalobos, Nina Kravitz, Loco Dice, Raresh, Magda, etc the list goes on & on. As well as their nights in the Sub Club they’ve always enjoyed taking their music & parties out of the club en...

Going Out - Streetrave & The Arches present Danny Tenaglia

Image
STREETrave & The Arches are very proud to present a legend. After an 18 year chase they have finally managed to secure their holy grail. Not played in Scotland for over 12 years.....Never played for STREETrave or Colours and never played at Scotlands No. 1 venue The Arches......However tonight (Friday 16th August )this will all change...... They bring to Glasgow the one and only Danny Tenaglia. Danny Tenaglia's love affair with music, and the world's subsequent romance with him, is one of the critical veins in the body of dance music. He is every dancer's secret discovery; a random purchase at the record store, a reluctant night out that unexpectedly turned magic. Explosive success came not behind a major label release, or a world tour, or a radio hit remix: It happened when enough people had the private Tenaglia experience for themselves. As in every year since his DJ odyssey began, all across the globe, from Acapulco to Tokyo, more people ex...

The Return of Dance Mania Records!

Image
Since the early 80's and late 90's Dance Mania Records were prominent in the house and acid house scene, in later years they defined the sound of Ghetto house and brought it to the club scene for all to jack to by adding as they say "even lower and dirty 808s and 909s". The label put out dance-floor weapons from Lil Louis to Pierre's Fantasy Club (PF), rhythms from legends like Traxmen, DJ Funk, and Tyree Cooper with many in between.   Bought over in 2005 by DJ Funk the label took a brief hiatus for 15 years with next to no releases bar DJ Funks (#1001). There has been no work from the record label in recent years until now, and to mark and celebrate the return of the renowned label Vin Sol has treated us to a mix of the "Dark Side" of Dance Mania. Featuring old school classics from Tyree, DJ Funk and Houz Mon along with a new track being given away by Vin Sol, his new "Frequency (Factory Style)"which you can download from here . ...

Going Out - Pistols At Dawn With Alfredo (3 Hour Balearic Set)

Image
One of our favourite club nights to emerge in the last few months has to be Pistols At Dawn . In a short space of time they have brought some great guests to one of Fat Buddha Store 's favourite Bar/Club spaces, Max's La Cheetah on Queen St in Glasgow. Guests have included Balearic Mike, Bill Brewster, Tusk Wax and now the legend that is Alfredo. As far as DJs are concerned, there are very few who merit such a title. However there are very few DJs who have had the influence of Alfredo Fiorito. Or as he's more commonly known, DJ Alfredo . To put it simply. Alfredo is pretty much responsible for modern clubbing as we know it in the UK. Quite a feat for an Argentinian journalist living on a small Spanish island. In 1987's Britain, going to a night club for most people was a very different experience to what most of us are now used to. Clubbing meant dressing in your smartest clothes to get in to your local ritzy nightclub where the main goal was to get ...

Going Out - Naive w/ DJ Falcon at The Berkeley Suite

Image
Naive welcome back DJ Falcon for their final party of the spring programme this Saturday (11th May) at the Berkeley Suite in Glasgow. It's a timely appearance, as Falcon has recently returned to the studio alongside long time friends Daft Punk, collaborating on a track due to be released on Random Access Memories. Given past collective works, we've faith that it'll be one of the standouts from the album. The Together releases by Falcon and Thomas Bangalter are certainly a fine template and eponymous examples of the French House sound. Vitamins pairing Shaun and Tanner will be opening the first couple of hours of the evening with some fitting disco and house selections. Things kick off at 11pm and run till 3am. Tickets look set to go fast, so you better get on this one quick and the way it's looking you should Dress to Sweat!

The Return Of Horse Meat Disco At The Berkeley Suite

Image
Horse Meat Disco make a welcome return to Glasgow's great disco den The Berkeley Suite tomorrow night (Saturday 27th April), and if previous experience is anything to go by, then it's set to be outstanding. Now approaching their tenth year of existence, the four man DJ club collective Horse Meat Disco have continued to lead the way in the disco field with packed residencies at their HQ Eagle London in London's inner city Vauxhall, Cielo and various venues in New York, Prince Charles in Berlin and Silencio/Wanderlust in Paris. Inspired by the music and inclusive ethos of New York's heady club scene in the 80s & 90s the collective have garnered a unique reputation for throwing amazing parties with unmatchable sets. The quartet of DJ's each mix their own individual interpretations of the disco sound with a soundtrack that marries their expertise and shared knowledge and experience in the field. Expect all manner of dancefloor movers from classic to cos...

Going Out - Subculture With Harri & Jasper

Image
Subculture on Saturday's at Glasgow's world renowned Sub Club have always been a staple of the clubbing calender, with some outstanding guests joining residents Harri & Domenic for some of the best sounds around, anyone in attendance will testify to it being up their with the best. This Saturday at the Sub Club long standing Subculture resident Harri is joined behind the decks by his eldest offspring Jasper James. We all think its a pretty big deal for both father and son to be playing alongside each other at one of the world’s longest running weekly club nights so they’re making a fuss about it. Growing up in the house of Harri it’s no surprise that Jasper’s own DJ career is in the ascent and since this is the first time father and son team up on the Subculture decks for the whole night, they’re battling it out for domestic honours - loser does the dishes!  As it ‘s approaching quickly, the Sub Club have put together a Q&A with a difference to see how w...

Motor City Electronics - Terence Parker

Image
Motor City Electronics is back tonight (Friday 22nd Feb) They did originally plan for this to be a four part series but there's just so much they didn't cover over the four nights at the tail end of last year. For their first MCE night of 2013 they have none other than the turntable wizard that is Terrence Parker. As many of you will know Terrence was supposed to headline their Hogmanay party. He couldn't make it due to illness and was utterly gutted he had to cancel on them. He promised he would reschedule the date at the first opportunity and they were delighted he was able to do it so quickly. Terrence Parker has been honing his skills on the turntables for over 30 years and is easily one of the finest DJ's on the planet. He'll be performing a very special 3 hour / 4 deck set for them, Trust us when we say, this is not one to be missed!   They will be bringing a Funktion One approved Funktion One sound system in for the occasion and door t...

Going Out - The House Sound Of Chicago w/ Farley Jackmaster Funk

Image
After a very successful 2012 La Cheetah Club are back with a bang in 2013 and to say they're kicking things of in style would be an understatement! 2012 saw them launch the Motor City Electronics series of nights, which was initially a four part series dedicated to the electronic music of Detroit. For their first night in 2013 they're moving their attention to another city known for it's pioneering contribution to club music. We are of course talking about the windy city of Chicago!   They'll be running their "La Cheetah Club Presents... The House Sound Of Chicago" nights sporadically throughout 2013 and to kick things off they have a true legend in our midst! Farley Keith Williams, better known to you and I as Farley Jackmaster Funk will be in town for a UK exclusive performance. Farley has stayed true to his roots over the years so expect to hear the true house sound of Chicago from the man who (some might argue) brought House to these shor...

Image
2012 has definitely been Bicep’s year. On Saturday night (24th Nov) the Irish production duo, make their Subculture debut at Glasgow's famous Sub Club alongside two of our favourite DJ's, Harri & Domenic . Image
Well it's that time of the week again and it looks like it's Subculture at the Sub Club for us once more as they'll be hosting Chicago legend Lil Louis. Regarded as one of the founding fathers of house music Lil Louis has pioneered the way for Chicago House music, well known in the 80's for his massive club tune "French Kiss" and being one of the first house artists to release music on a major label. With DJ sets that have known for being as versatile as his productions expect to be schooled on house music and to have a a great time. As ever Glasgow top dogs Harri and Dom will be supporting. This is not to be missed. In the build up to tonight Lil Louis has also brought his House Music Museum, the worlds only "House Music Art Gallery and Mobile Museum". The exhibition is derived from a film project directed by Louis entitled "The House That Chicago Built"featuring a remarkable collection of house mousic memorabilia, artefacts, mu...

Music Monday - Greg Wilson Bestival Mix

Image
Greg Wilson is a Merseyside based DJ and producer who started out back in 1975 and has strong links to both the 80's electro scene in Manchester and the current disco/re edit scene which has seen his following grow on a global scale. Between 1984 and 2003 Greg actually quit DJ'ing but returned and now plays frequently all over the world. And his mixes are a constant favourite on the store soundsystem. Seen as the weather has been so depressing recently and festival season seems to be officially over we thought we would try and cheer people up with Greg's latest live mix from the Bollywood tent at Bestival. A real nice blend of old tracks and new and one that's be sure to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step! Greg Wilson has a fantastic knowledge on music and recently expressed his thoughts on a recent debate on the origins of dance music. A very interesting read, as well as the rest of his blog which you can check out here . You can also check ou...

Music Monday - Spencer "Hidden Depths of Numbers Mix"

Image
Last week Glasgow label and club night Numbers dropped their latest mix courtesy of original member Spencer. The mix showcases the best the label has to offer, blending the old with the new and everything inbetween. The mix is a real favourite and getting rinsed in store at the moment, it's good to see the Glasgow based label doing so well and they aren't looking to slow down any time soon.
