Going Out - Moodymann at Max's La Cheetah

Image
Someone who needs no introduction is Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr), who plays Max's La Cheetah Club tonight in Glasgow (Friday 7th Match). An outspoken voice in the normally non-confrontational world of electronic dance music, Moodymann is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre's origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned. Utilizing classic soul an d jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster, he has achieved classic status thanks to gems like "Sunday Morning", "Shades of Jae", and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra's "People Make the World Go Round". Following years of 12" only releases, he compiled his best work on "Silentintroduction", one of the most ...

Going Out - On The Quiet with The Revenge & Ali Ooft at Max's La Cheetah

Image
New club night On The Quiet makes it's debut tonight (Saturday 15th Feb) at Max's La Cheetah Club on Queens St in Glasgow, and brings along The Revenge (Roar Groove) and Ali Ooft (Foto Recordings) to kick things off alongside residents Craig Moog and Kev Stevens. As one half of the 6th Borough Project, Graeme Clark aka The Revenge is a producer who understands the past but embraces the future. The analogue approach, forward thinking productions and his versatility as a DJ, has ensured him a place as one of the leading names in House music in recent years. The main force behind OOFT Music is Ali Herron. Originally cutting his production chops with tracky edits and some early OOFT! remixes alongside The Revenge, Ali has been steadily building up his own studio over the last 5 years, putting out a series of deep, pitched-down house tracks on labels such as Instruments of Rapture, PPF, Delusions of Grandeur, Rememory,Wolf Music and his own Foto Recordings label...

Going Out - Dixon Avenue Basement Jams at The Sub Club

Image
One of our favourite labels and one of the best labels around right now has to be Dixon Avenue Basement Jams. It's great to see the guy's behind it Kenny and Dan take to Subculture at Glasgow's Sub Club tomorrow night (Saturday 25th Jan) for what looks set to be an outstanding night of music. Based out of Glasgow, the motto for the labels is “real rockin’ raw shit from the street for the clubs”, and it sums up the imprint to date perfectly. Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, quite frankly, release weird, non standard machine music that spits and splurts, blurts and bleats all kinds of alien patterns, hooks and melodies into your ears and has done with every single one of its EP's so far. Despite belying any one easy genre classification, never is the music too weird, alien or off the wall to not be hugely likeable – there is often a moment of serene synth calm, a catchy vocal clip or soulful detroit reflection hidden within the rawness of EPs from Marquis Ha...

Going Out - Million Dollar Disco at The Berkeley Suite

Image
Million Dollar Disco return to Glasgow this Saturday night (18th January) almost a year to the day since their last party there. To say they're excited is a bit of an understatement, anyone who was there last January is sure to understand why. All this in the intimate surrounding of one of Glasgow's best club spaces, The Berkeley Suite. Al Kent was born in Scotland. His father was an avid record collector and had a cabinet full of them. And Whisky. Everything from Abba and Elvis to the Glitter Band and Buddy Holly was in there. What a load of shit they were.
In 1976 Al ran away from home to live in New York. Here, at the age of 8 he started attending the Loft and hanging out with Nicky Siano and a whole bunch of cool New York DJs with Italian names. In 1978 he was arrested for possession of PCP while guesting at Better Days with Tee Scott and deported back to Glasgow, where his dad was now getting into a bit more David Essex. He was shit too.
So Al opened....

Felix Da Housecat at The Berkeley Suite

Image
Felix Da Housecat will be tearing up Glasgow’s Berkeley Suite tonight (23rd November) for another set of house music and electroclash. His reinterpretation of songs by Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue and Nina Simone has made him one of the most dominant remixers and producers on the planet. Felix da Housecat’s 2001 album, Kittenz and thee Glitz, turned the dance music world on its side as his collaborations with the now infamous Miss Kittin on “Silver Screen” and “Madame Hollywood” and Melistar on “Harlot” and “What Does it Feel Like” spawned a synth club revival. Along the way, Felix gained mainstream press acceptance and was heralded by Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone and Spin as one of the most creative artists in music today. Over the course of 20 years his determination and willingness to re-invent himself have led him to a point that has now included a Grammy nomination, remix work for artists such as Madonna, Garbage, New Order and Giorgio Moroder; to DJ gig...

Going Out - A Love From Outer Space at The Berkeley Suite

Image
A Love From Outer Space drops into Glasgow tonight (Friday 8th November) for it's Bi-Monthly residency at one of Glasgow's great club spaces The Berkeley Suite with residents Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston behind the controls. Beginning in 2010 in a residency within the intimate neo-dinge of Stoke Newington’s The Waiting Room, A Love from Outer Space was originally brought together by the advent of an excitement held for sounds situated within the mid-tempo frame; a lower BPM statute which has accented the astral, the headlong and the brawny, melding disco’s drive and glossy gestures, the cosmic glints of kosmische, thunderous dub-sonority, and intrepid post-punk bombast with proto-house and that of acid-house; the background of perennial residents and night owners, Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston. The pair held a mutual regard for Adrian Sherwood records and moved in the same circles for a number of years before ‘the oasis of slowness’, offered by AL...

Going Out - Madlib at SWG3

Image
Otis Jackson Jr. (born October 24, 1973 in Oxnard, California), known professionally as Madlib , is a Los Angeles-based DJ, multi-instrumentalist, rapper, and music producer. Known under a plethora of pseudonyms, he is one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed hip hop producers of the 2000s and has collaborated with a myriad of hip hop artists, including MF DOOM (as Madvillain), and the late J Dilla (as Jaylib). Madlib has described himself as a "DJ first, producer second, and MC last,"[1][2] and he has done several projects as a DJ, mixer, or remixer. In 2003, Madlib announced two collaborative projects. Working with the late hip hop producer J Dilla, the duo known as Jaylib released Champion Sound. The other was Madlib's collaboration with rapper MF DOOM, known together as Madvillain. The 2004 Madvillainy album was highly anticipated and well-received, topping many critics' year-end lists.[7] The 2005 Quasimoto album, The Further Adventures...

One of Glasgow's most loved parties Sensu turns 9 tonight (Friday 25th Oct) at the world famous Sub Club in Glasgow. Kicking things off back in the Q club in 2004 residents Barry Price & Junior moved onwards and upwards to the long winding steps of the Liquid Lounge. However, their aspiration was always to host Sensu in their favourite place in the world, The Sub Club . Luckily they were given that chance! For their first night in the Sub club they booked Lawrence & Mr C, everything went better than they could of imagined and since then they have tried to bring a sound to Glasgow that excites themselves and hopefully everyone who has supported them in the past 9 years. The club night has hosted an endless amount of outstanding guests, such as Steve Bug, Ricardo Villalobos, Nina Kravitz, Loco Dice, Raresh, Magda, etc the list goes on & on. Going Out - Drone with Richard Fearless at The Berkeley Suite

Image
DJ and co-founder of Death In Vegas Richard Fearless has been busy with his great bi-monthly club night Drone at The Berkeley Suite in Glasgow, and tonight (Fri 27th Sept) see's him step behind the turntables once again. Having emerged during the earliest throes of Britpop as something of a musical anomaly, Death In Vegas have continued to confound expectations ever since. Formed in 1994 as a vehicle for Richard Fearless and then co-conspirator Steve Hellier's genre crossing experiments, Death In Vegas have maintained a high degree of quality rather than churning out an endless stream of continually inferior but prolific records. With Tim Holmes having replaced Hellier, 1999's second long player The Contino Sessions and its successor Scorpio Rising brought about mainstream recognition and commercial success, album number four Satan's Circus took an even more disparate route into Germanic territories and ultimately, remains their "lost classic". ...

Going Out - Supermax 6th Birtday at The Berkeley Suite

Going Out - Streetrave & The Arches present Danny Tenaglia

Image
STREETrave & The Arches are very proud to present a legend. After an 18 year chase they have finally managed to secure their holy grail. Not played in Scotland for over 12 years.....Never played for STREETrave or Colours and never played at Scotlands No. 1 venue The Arches......However tonight (Friday 16th August )this will all change...... They bring to Glasgow the one and only Danny Tenaglia. Danny Tenaglia's love affair with music, and the world's subsequent romance with him, is one of the critical veins in the body of dance music. He is every dancer's secret discovery; a random purchase at the record store, a reluctant night out that unexpectedly turned magic. Explosive success came not behind a major label release, or a world tour, or a radio hit remix: It happened when enough people had the private Tenaglia experience for themselves. As in every year since his DJ odyssey began, all across the globe, from Acapulco to Tokyo, more people ex...

Most commonly known for his participation in the Rub’N’Tug psychedelic disco machine alongside Eric Duncan, Thomas' career in music stretches all the way back to late 80s Cambridge where he was a part of the “legendary” Tonka party crew alongside long term aficionado DJ Harvey – the two would later record together as Map Of Africa on the Whatever We Want label. Thomas Bullock has been a resident of the USA since the early 90s, first pitching up in San Francisco and gaining reputation as part of the “Wicked” collective then moving to New York City and inadvertently starting electroclash as part of A.R.E Weapons, before focusing on less risible musical endeavors under a multiplicity of names includi...
