Music Monday - DJ Premier
If you don't know the name DJ Premier, then there may be something wrong with you!
To celebrate Premier's 47th birthday which passed last week, this Music Monday is dedicated to looking back on the career of one of hip hops greatest producers.
DJ Premier basically crafted the sound of 90's east coast hip hop singlehandedly with his 'boom-bap' style production perfectly suited to the hard, gritty lyricists populating New York at the time.
In 1989, a Boston MC by the name of Guru reached out to Houston native DJ Premier, then known as Waxmaster C, after splitting with his DJ. Preemo sent him a beat tape which Guru loved and Gangstarr, as we all know and love them, was born.
All through the 90's, DJ Premier was also producing for the cream of the crop of New York MC's like Nas, Jeru The Damaja, Mos Def, KRS-ONE, Biggie Smalls, Big L, M.O.P and Lord Finesse to name but a few, and helping to craft many of the classic hip hop albums of the decade.
New York DJ's Pete Rosenberg and Cipha Sounds also wanted to celebrate the birthday of this hip hop legend, so they went ahead and made an hour long mix of some of Premier's greatest tracks, including a little Q & A with the great man himself, you can listen below!
