Music Monday - Dropkick Murphys
So this is a bit of a departure from our usual Music Monday's in the store, but with a staff as diverse as ours there was always a chance it was going to happen! The Dropkick Murphys are an American punk band from Quincy in Massachusetts, the band are also known for playing "Celtic Punk" or "Celtic Rock" and have week long parties and shows in Boston to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
In the band's early years they were signed to Tim Armstrong's Hellcat Records and released 5 albums with the independent label including "Blackout" and "The Warriors Code" which featured songs including "Tessie""The Warriors Code" - A song about boxing legend and Massachusetts own Micky Ward (Who's life and career would later be depicted by Mark Walhberg in the movie "The Fighter"), "The Auld Triangle" - a Brendan Behan cover and "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" which was featured in the Academy Award winning film "The Departed."
Since leaving Hellcat Records the band have released two albums on their own label "Born and Bred records" the first was "Meanest of Times" which featured the songs "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya" "The State Of Massachusetts" and my favourite "Flannigans Ball" while the second was "Going Out in Style" which featured guest appearances from Bruce Springsteen as well as Fat Mike from NOFX.
The band are due to release there third album on their own label entitled "Signed and Sealed in Blood" in January of 2013.
The reason for the bands inclusion in today's Music Monday was not only because they are just a great band but also because this weekend they announced that they will be playing Glasgow's famous Barrowlands venue in January of 2013. I have seen the band this year and can say from personal experience that they are amazing live and would urge anyone not too sure on them to go along and check them out for yourself! I know I'll be there again.
