Inflatable Art in a Can
Hi, firstly big thanks to the artist Iain Kettles for sending me these images of an arts project he was part of this year, it was part og the GI festival http://www.glasgowinternational.org/.
For the past 15 years, Ian Kettles art practice has taken the form of large scale inflatable sculptures. These have been both realised in gallery spaces and site specific outdoor locations.
Most recently, Iain’s work can be seen in a commissioned piece for Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital, in London. An 18 meter high arrangement of giant animal shaped “blow-up” balloons nestled on a stylized silver birch tree, filling an atrium space viewed both from the street and all the floors inside the hospital building.
Iain’s work has also been featured in “Express Yourself” a commissioned Channel 4 arts programme for TV. He has also participated in exhibitions such as “Here+Now, Scottish Art 1990-2001” at DCA, Dundee; in Denmark he collaborated with artist Susie Hunter to transform two venues (Kunsthallen Brandst Klaedefabrik, Odense and Nikolaij in Copenhagen) into spectacular inflatable landscapes for children.
The images are great, at first i thought they were super-imposed, after you get over the disbelief at a 5 metre high Clash Can you start to take in the surroundings and see the graffiti.
The can was hand painted and Iain's work is beyond question, spoke to him last time he was in the store and a thoroughly nice guy he is to, hope you enjoy his work, one of the best things ive seen for ages.
